What is Chronic Stress?

Stress is your body’s response to any kind of demand or threat. When a person senses danger, the body’s defences take into effect and causes a process known as the “ fight, flight or freeze” reaction or the “ stress response."

Stress can be considered as helpful during certain situations. It can help you stay focused, make you feel energetic, and help you become more alert. During emergency circumstances, the stress response gives you a little more strength to help you defend yourself.

While stress can be helpful at certain times, when a person reaches a point where they are constantly stressed, it starts to affects their physical, mental, and emotional health. The longer your stress system is activated, the easier it becomes to trigger it and the harder it is to shut it off.

Chronic stress is a term that describes the emotional strain experienced through negative life situations for a prolonged period of time with a sense of little or no control.
